An Update from Washington: Policy and Advocacy

2008 is both an election year and the latter half of the 110th Congress. What is happening with No Child Left Behind, the Workforce Investment Act, and other major education laws? Part presentation and part workshop, this session will look at the current state of affairs in Washington, DC, and provide an update on these and other major national education initiatives. In addition, information on effective, grassroots-level techniques to get the attention of decision makers at the national level will be shared.

John Segota has been with TESOL since 1996. John’s responsibilities at TESOL include government relations, media communications, and management of TESOL’s advocacy activities. He works closely with TESOL’s executive director and Board of Directors on issues management and elements of strategic planning, and has also assisted with the development of several standards projects. Part of his ongoing duties also include serving as TESOL’s liaison to organizations such as the National Coalition for Literacy and the Joint National Committee for Languages, as well as serving as a staff liaison to the TESOL Standards Committee and the Global Professional Issues Committee Committee. John has a BA in Political Science with a concentration in International Studies from the College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, MA, and a graduate certificate in Project Management from the Keller Graduate School of Management.
