AVID’s purpose is to provide academic mentoring to students who are underrepresented in the college community. The presenter will demonstrate AVID classroom strategies for preparing ELLs for college/university. The presentation will focus on strategies for SAT and ACT on-demand writing tasks. Example prompts and strategies will be modeled.

On-demand writing has joined the ranks of high stakes assessments. One way to prepare students for testing in a randomly selected genre, particularly English Learners, is explicit instruction through genre analysis. Writing instruction that is provided through scaffolding and field building can help students identify the prompt genre and articulate effective responses.

Many ESL students entering the University of California are unprepared for the writing requirements of their colleges. The presenters will discuss the UC Analytical Writing Placement Exam and the Basic Writing Program at UCSD. The presenters will provide several examples of student writing and the scoring rubric used by the UC system.

All students should have exposure to words so they have a constant reference for writing and verbal communication. Teaching students to recognize onset/rimes in words can help with the sounding out and spelling of a word. Presenter will demonstrate how using certain techniques can aid students in successfully spelling multiple words.

But in today’s disinformation environment, filled with propaganda, stereotypes, and consumerism, our students need skills to think critically about media and advertisements. Lorraine Segal will introduce media literacy concepts and present multi-media clips, resources, and projects to help our ESL composition and speech students become effective local/global citizens.

Google documents is a good tool for doing peer review outside the classroom and also reduce cultural barrier. Learners can have several peer reviews from their classmates.
